Introducing Neville Hammond, Vice President Instrument Engineering and Training

How long have you been at Hu-Friedy?
40 years
How did you come to find yourself at Hu-Friedy?
When I was 15 years old I joined an instrument company in England that manufactured Surgical Instruments, I served a 7 year apprenticeship, After working for that company for 14 years, it became obvious to me that I had progressed as far as I could go within that company and was fast becoming bored. I enjoyed making Surgical Instruments but I needed a new challenged. In discussing the situation with my wife we made a decision to try to find Surgical instrument companies in another part of the world, We chose America and sent resumes to various Surgical company's in the Chicagoland area, I received two replies and set up interviews with these company's. I flew to the States and had those interviews, unfortunately I was disappointed with the company's that I interviewed with and was ready to return to England, The person that I was staying with out of the blue suggested dental instrument company's, so we started looking in the yellow pages for dental company's, we found quite a few and started to call, unfortunately each one we called did not do any manufacturing just bought and sold,(dealers). The suggestion was then made, the next call we make if they were only a dealer do they know of any manufactures, Guess who we called D,L Saslow, Richard Saslows brother and the rest is history. I called Dick Saslow and I have been associated with Hu-Friedy ever since.

What is your favorite part of the job?
Working with the people, I have found it to be the most rewarding part of my job, Training employees how to make instruments, then watching them train other employees how to make them.
What is your favorite Hu-Friedy memory?
Over the years I have had many great memories, so it is hard to choose, but I think the memory I will cherish most is the recognition that I received from the Saslow family, and Howard Wax on my 40 years at Hu-Friedy, the amount of work put into it by the vision team will remain with me forever
