Introducing Phyllis Martina, RDH, BSDH, MBA - Schools and Institutions, Western Region

How long have you been with Hu-Friedy?
12 years.
How did your transition from hygienist to dental industry professional take place?
I returned to school to get a masters in business administration after working in private practice and teaching for years. Once I graduated I started looking for a marketing position. Hu-Friedy had a great reputation for making high quality instruments and for creating a great environment for its employees. An added bonus was my former dental hygiene teacher and mentor, Sherry Burns, was employed by Hu-Friedy and I knew if Sherry thought Hu-Friedy was a good place to work it would be. At a dental convention I spoke to the local rep who gave me Karen Neiner's business card. I sent Karen my resume and a month later I had moved to Chicago to start working for Hu-Friedy in marketing.

What is your favorite part of your job?
I really like the contact with the students. The energy and enthusiasm they project is contagious.
Do you have a favorite Hu-Friedy memory?
Sales meetings, any of them. I love seeing everyone together.
What sets Hu-Friedy apart from other companies in the industry?
Hu-Friedy is small enough that there is a sense of being part of the Hu-Friedy family, but it is big enough that we have great products and support to do creative programs for our customers.
Is there anything you miss about being a practicing hygienist?
I liked the feeling that I was helping people stay healthy. I still feel I am helping people in my position with Hu-Friedy but their health is out of my hands now.
