COURSE DESCRIPTION
The learner will gain insight and understanding of the history of dental implants as well as the considerations and recommendations regarding patient selection, surgical and prosthodontic treatment planning, and long-term implant assessment and maintenance. The best practices are presented for the learner to assimilate and subsequently incorporate into patient treatment plans.
OBJECTIVES
Upon the completion of this module, each participant can expect to:
- Summarize the historical perspective and evolution of dental implants.
- Differentiate between one-stage and two-stage implant devices.
- Identify factors affecting osseointegration of dental implants.
- Describe the differences of periodontal maintenance goals for natural teeth and dental implants.
- Understand the goals of radiographic assessments and their role in implant maintenance.
- Explain the best practices approach that incorporates visual, mobility, and probing assessments into the overall care process.
- Identify the adverse clinical conditions that may develop in patients with dental implants.
- Compare the goals of scaling and debridement for natural and implant dentition.
- Determine an appropriate modulated (alternating) maintenance interval based on the patient's clinical requirements.

About the Author
Dr. Michael P. Rethman
Dr. Michael P. Rethman is a Honolulu periodontist, adjunct assistant professor of Periodontology at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry and adjunct assistant professor of Periodontology at the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, University of Maryland. He is also a past-President of the American Academy of Periodontology, a former Director of the U.S. Army Institute of Dental Research and chairs the American Dental Association's Council on Scientific Affairs. Dr. Rethman
lectures and writes on a variety of topics in dentistry.
