Personal Questions

What music is playing in your office while you work, or in your car while you are driving?
I usually listen to talk radio and when I get tired of listening to the same talk over and over again, I switch to an oldies station.

Describe the day your practice opened.
was very young, 23, when I joined my father in his dental practice. It was a very proud moment. Little did I know then how much more there was to learn.

If your most used dental instrument could talk what would it tell you?
A Hollenback carver was on my tray a lot. It would tell me that I could carve out any life I wanted.

What would you do if you weren't a dental professional?
I often asked myself that question. I knew I wanted to be a dentist when I was a youngster because I wanted to follow in my father's footsteps. Now that I am retired from clinical practice I do enjoy speaking and writing and those are my new professions.

What is your favorite outside the office activity?
I enjoy reading, exercising, and traveling. The beach is always calling me!

What is your most memorable case as a practitioner?
N.H. was an attractive woman who had a gummy smile. I worked with a periodontist and was able to lengthen her teeth and give her a beautiful smile. The end result was fabulous.

What has been your shining moment in dentistry?
There have been a few, including placing a 50 year medal around my father's neck celebrating his 50 years in practice. He practiced twice as long as me. I relish all the opportunities and experiences that dentistry has given me. I am honored to become the 2009 President of the American Association of Women Dentists. I stand with many exceptional women dentists.

Are there any other dentists in your family?
My husband, John, is also a dentist. We've been married since 1979. His father was also a dentist AND was a 1946 classmate of my father's at Washington U. I have a brother-in-law who is also a dentist and was a classmate of mine. Neither of our two children have entered the dental field, though.

It sounds as if you have discovered hidden talents since you retired from clinical practice.
Yes, little did I know that so many opportunities would appear for me. I rediscovered my love for writing and found that I enjoy speaking and spreading the message of living a more balanced life. And, writing a book, never in my wildest dreams. Yes, all things are possible!
